Young French
photographer Charles Fréger's engaging portrait provides us with the cover
for Pluk 11, our second issue to include European coverage.
Read more about his upcoming show at Galerie Poller, Frankfurt am Main, in
EuroViews. Magnum photographer, Luc
0elahaye, another Frenchman who is yet to receive the exposure in the UK he
deserves, has created a new body of work called "History" documenting
significant political events over the past two years. We review both this
and his Russian photo essay "Winterreise", out In paperback this March in
Book Mark.
In Interview,
one of art book publishing's most controversial figures, Edward
Booth-Clibborn, talks frankly about the current state of book publishing and
his own approach to balancing creativity and business practice. Pluk also
talks to Melvin Sokolsky about his famous 1963 "Bubble Shoot" for Harpers
Bazaar in the context of the upcoming exhibition of Contacts at
artandphotographs, London (20 March-3 May).Charles
Fréger is a young photographer who has already received great acclaim in his
native France for his frank and unsentimental portrait series. Exhibited at
Galerie Poller, Frankfurt (27 March-17 May) are works from his four series:
Waterpolo, Pattes Blanches, Miss and Notre-Dame. Shot against a plain
background and photographed frontally with no effects, Fréger eliminates all
nonessential elements to capture the individual presences behind the
uniforms of school child, water polo player, beauty contestant or
Legionnaire.
